Environmental crime is a rapidly growing global threat with far-reaching security implications. This article explores the potential for NATO, driven by its evolving comprehensive security approach, to play a role in combating environmental crime. It argues that NATO’s unique capacities, including its Stability Policing mechanism, could complement existing efforts by organizations such as INTERPOL and the United Nations Environment Program. NATO’s involvement aligns with its focus on countering terrorism, organized crime, and addressing human security concerns exacerbated by environmental crimes. However, potential challenges—such as mission creep and the blurring of police and military roles—must be carefully considered. This article proposes that a targeted and collaborative approach would be the most effective strategy for NATO’s engagement in combating environmental crime.
